Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter return as Bill and Ted for another adventure in “Bill & Ted Face the Music, ” on-demand and in theaters on Aug. 28, and their quest this time is to find a song they wrote and save the world through music. But what’s the story behind that song? It took a village to put it together and numerous passes to bring the eight-minute spectacle together. Spearheading the process was music supervisor Jonathan Leahy (“Girls, ” “Fruitvale Station”). Below, he breaks down how important it was to find the right guitar shredder and follow in Steven Vai’s footsteps, and how he found the right musicians to accurately riff off the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Louis Armstrong. So, no pressure: How did you create the song that saves the universe? I had a small role in writing the song, but I had more of a creative role because one of the writers had to go on tour and I was entrusted with the ProTools recording%20and%20editing session. The song had to be Reconformed (a sound editing program through Vordio) many times and some of that fell to me. But the bulk of the song came from writers at Heavy Duty Projects, which is run by [Haim/ Vampire Weekend producer] Ariel Rechtshaid. Two things jumped out at me. The first and main thing was the air-shredding in the third film. In the second film, “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, ” the shredding is famously performed by Steve Vai, who is a legend. We couldn’t take a step down in this film, and we had to maintain the guitar authenticity. My search led me to guitarist Tosin Abasi, but what sealed his position as the shredder for this movie was when I saw a video of him on tour with Steve Vai. Steve brought Tosin on stage and said, “I’m about to bring someone on stage who represents the next generation of electric guitar virtuosity. ” When I saw that video, it was meant to be. Louis Armstrong features in the film — how did that aspect come together? I felt tremendous pressure to get the Louis Armstrong horn part, and we were very lucky to get the Grammy-nominated Christian Scott to play the parts. Christian has a cameo in the film – you’ll see him for just a moment as one of the most important people in the universe. It’s when Bill and Ted go to the future, and you see Christian onscreen for a second, floating in mid-air looking down ominously at Bill and Ted as they’re informed that they need to save the universe. What did you want the song to be about, thematically speaking, and what was the vibe you were seeking? We weren’t looking for a song, or themes or vocal hooks that would be big enough and memorable enough. I think the wording that I used when I talked to the artists and producers and managers was, “We’re looking for melodic themes that sound like they can be chanted at a football stadium. ” We listened to a ton of options, and some of our favorite themes came from Heavy Duty Projects. Other themes came from Ray Suen — he’s an old friend of mine and provided the Jimi Hendrix guitar parts. He’s such a monster musician — when you hear Hendrix battling Mozart, that’s all Ray. Were there any changes in the song process? Our music editor, Jeff Carson, was constantly adapting to the picture changes, and quickly too. It changed so many times over the months. As we got closer to the picture being locked, we called it “The Frankenstein” because it came from many different sources, and it was a mess. At that point, Ray was on tour with Lorde, so I had to call someone new. I called a guitarist Joshua Ray Gooch [Shania Twain’s lead guitarist]. We talked about it and how the themes had been written, and where the guitar solo was going to start and finish and how the music needed to be finessed. I asked him if he was up to the challenge, and he said yes. He brought in a fellow musician, Cory Churko, and together they re-recorded the whole piece. In the end, that piece is almost eight minutes long. The beginning is intentionally messy because everyone is setting up their instruments and tuning them. But Joshua and Cory are the heroes, they produced the bulk of what you hear in that final eight minutes. And we had Christian and Heavy Duty Projects come back and do some overdubs, but that song was such a big project and a team effort in the end.

I don't need to scroll through the comments to know what they're about. Watched it the other night, and it mostly fell flat for me. Somewhere in the intertwining plot-lines there's a cool concept, but it's muddled by, what appeared to be, cheap production, some mediocre acting, meh comedy, and a side plot about Bill and Ted's wives that doesn't really go anywhere, and isn't exactly necessary. It's hard to put into word what I mean by cheap production. Maybe it's something lost in the transition from film to digital between sequels. The CGI work, especially for scenes taking place in the future, were... uninspired. And there were a number of scenes that felt like they did one fast take, and then moved to the next. Just felt to me like there were too many awkward spaces between lines, and areas of the film that probably could have had a score underneath it that didn't. Just weird stuff like that. Alex Winter brought a ton of energy to his role, very reminiscent to his character in the previous films, but I felt the complete opposite about Keanu Reeves who seemed really stiff. And this is taking into consideration the difference in the actors ages since they were last in these parts. I just couldn't help feel that Reeves just wasn't into this role anymore. There was a sort of opposite issue with the actresses who played their daughters. Ted's daughter totally got into her role and hammed her character up so that she perfectly mirrored Reeves' character in the previous films, while Bill's daughter fell in and out of character, and couldn't seem to keep the same energy up as her co-star. The previous films weren't laugh riots or anything, but the jokes and slapstick mostly hit, even if it wasn't out-loud hilarious. This film had little of that for me, the exceptions mostly being the scenes with the robot, who I thought had some of the better lines. Death was underutilized, the impersonations of Hendrix and Louis Armstrong were a bit wonky (but whatever), and Kristen Schaal as Rufus' daughter was fine and well done, but she's no George Carlin. I feel that most people could give this film a pass, and not miss anything of note except a clumsy walk down memory lane, which I'm assuming is all most fans wanted. For all it's time in development, though, it felt half baked.

Is he playing hopscotch by himself. dude he's cheating lmao. I dont like his body language. Bill & Ted Face the Music feels a bit like a prank. Franchise filmmaking is king now, and because of this, any revival feels cynical by default. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and its sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, are perhaps among the least cynical films ever made: sincere romps through time and the afterlife starring sweet morons who love rock n’ roll. They lack any sort of edge or hint of darkness (even when they go to Hell) and delight in their lack of sophistication. There’s not a lot there, but that’s what makes them charming. This makes the idea of a third film, released over 30 years after the first, feel like a stretch. Yet it might be my favorite movie released this year. I saw Bill & Ted Face the Music at a drive-in theater. It was something my partner and I had always wanted to do (drive-ins, not Bill & Ted) but lacked the opportunity. In a pandemic, however, drive-ins are among the only safe ways to go see movies outside of your home, so we borrowed a car and drove to see the only new movie playing at the drive-in that night. Neither of us had particularly strong feelings about the film — we were more excited about the act of seeing a movie than we were the movie itself — but it felt like the right one to see on a warm summer night with the windows down and truly bad concession stand food balanced on our laps. Bill & Ted Face the Music, like its predecessors, is a simple movie. Ted “Theodore” Logan (Keanu Reeves) and Bill S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter), have been told since they were teenagers that their rock band, the Wyld Stallyns, will write the song that will unite the world. However, they are now middle-aged men who somehow haven’t managed to pull it off. Because of this, the world is falling apart. Time and space are collapsing, and Kelly (Kristen Schaal), an emissary from the future, arrives to tell the Stallyns that they have until 7:17 p. m. to write the song or else everything comes to an end. To solve the problem with minimal effort, Bill and Ted decide to try what worked in the past: using a time machine to jump to a future where they’ve already written the song, and bring it back to the present. This goes wrong, and the duo spend the rest of the film trying to smooth over increasingly dire mistakes they make in the future as they continue to neglect the present. We never think as clearly about the present as we’d like to. I suspect that’s even more true now than it ever was. What, I wonder, will hindsight reveal about this year and how we received it? I watched Bill & Ted Face the Music in a remote New Jersey drive-in because drive-ins are among the few diversions available to me as the world falls apart. That collapse is never far from my mind, least of all during the 91-minute movie about two middle-aged men staring down the end of the world and trying to avoid doing anything about it. Throughout Face the Music, Bill and Ted travel further and further into their future to find that they never change. Their lives just get worse, because they never stop running from their problems, from trying to cheat their way out of doing the work to fix anything. Their future selves can’t improve until Bill and Ted stop seeking them out, because then that means they’ve stopped cheating their way into the song that saves the universe, and actually started making it. For the last year, I had been planning on getting married this month. That, like a lot of other things in 2020, is no longer happening, postponed for a year. I don’t know if that’s enough time. I doubt it’s enough time. Fretting about it, however, feels frivolous. So I don’t. Instead, I look at all of the other things there are to be angry about right now, and I feel that instead. I don’t know where to put all the rage. I can send it to the future, which looks worse the farther into it I reach. I can send it to the past and despair over every incremental step that brought us here. Both seem like terrible decisions for the person who is living here, now. So at the end of Bill & Ted Face the Music, I cried, because the present is the one thing I haven’t figured out yet, six months into calamity. I don’t know if the decisions I’m making today are the right ones or wrong ones, and I’m running out of fictions to spin myself to justify living and working and paying bills like the world isn’t literally on fire. I cried because the wedding we thought we’d have will probably never happen, because no one is getting the tomorrow they hoped for. And I cried because at the end of the movie everyone does stand up and face the music. Not because they’ve figured anything out, but because they love the hell out of each other. That’s all they really know how to do — be excellent to each other and play music really fucking loud. It’s just about all I know to do, too.

He even predicted the WHO being a global failure, just missing China corruption. I love the fact that these billionaires make their money in the United States and they set up tax exempt foundations and spend it in the third world. Yeah sure. Just like the Clintons. why don't you spend that money here in the United States to fix the problems we have here instead of trying to exterminate all of us. LUCIFERIAN.

Finally after so many years, they came back. But they are met with caution, seeing as we live in different times now, and it is extremely hard for characters created 30 years ago to have the same impact they did in their own time. And this is exactly what happens to Bill & Ted, they're older now, and only half the duo has sort of the same energy of the past few films, and that is Alex Winter who pretty much nails his character after so much time passed since he last played him (I read in the trivia section that he had to take acting lessons again, it certainly worked great. Keanu though; he just couldn't live up to his younger self, when he was way more expressive and efusive. We can't be sure if this is him just working with the idea that since Ted is now older, he can't exactly keep acting like a teenager, so he tone it down a bit. I could understand that, but in some scenes it's a bit depressing to watch him perform.
The plot is wacky, as expected, only fans of the first two films can really take the goofiness for granted, since it is the essence of the comedy of Bill and Ted. Even with the familiar absurdity, sometimes it felt like the magic was missing. It's obvious because that magic comes from a different era, and it simply cannot be replicated. It is a melancholic sentiment, because pretty much we all knew this couldn't top Excellent Adventure nor Bogus Journey, but still expected it would serve as a dignifying send-off to these great characters we all love. From what I've read all over the internet, the consensus indicates division: some who are content with the film, and some who believe it to be awful. I for one hand was so excited to see Alex and Keanu together again that I went ahead of myself and expected little of this film, so I wouldn't be disappointed of what is probably the last time we'll ever see these beloved dudes.
Apparently, it worked, because I liked the film for what it is. I laughed a lot, and kept a positive attitude right to the end, which came rather quickly, since I had hoped for the movie to last a bit longer.
As for their daughters, I thought they nailed their versions of their dads, with their speech rythm, vocabulary, enunciation and mannerisms; it was actually quite impressive. I enjoyed the fact that the writers combined the basic plots of the first two films together, a most excellent adventure through time searching for historical figures (and purely musical in this case) and a bogus journey to hell and back. In order for this film to be well received by the fans, it had to surround us with familiarity, the same plot devices as I mentioned earlier (time-traveling and hell) the quest for writing a song the would unite the world and save reality as we know it, the Wyld Stallyns, the catchphrases, and these characters who are now in their 40s but can't seem to find the stability a person of their age would normally have. They haven't changed all that much personally, but it is clear that they are older. This is why we still hear the constant "dudes" or "wows" it is because these phrases, are a part of who Bill and Ted really are, and I think that is the way that we should remember them: a bit older but with the same juvenile positivity and enthusiasm, and a matured heart, thanks to the love for their wives and daughters.
Always remember to be excellent to each other, and party on dudes.
